Fought in Sharpsburg, Maryland this battle in the Civil War was known as the Battle of Sharpsburg in the South, and the Battle of Antietam in the North. Known as the bloodest day of the Civil War, with an estimated 23,100 soldiers killed in battle on September 17, 1862, the Battle of Antietam had the most deaths in a one day battle in the Civil War.
The Union Commander in this battle was George B. McClellan and the Confederate Commander was Robert E. Lee. Neither the Union nor the Confederate won this war, but it was a Union strategic victory.

The Union decided to engage into battle first with the Confederate. General George B. McClellan had a great plan in battle, but the plan was poorly executed. The Union decided to fight from North to South trying to get the Confederate away from Pennsylvania, which is what the Confederate was to invade.
The Confederate and the Union fought all morning, all day, and all evening to try and win the battle.
